The Digestive System Lab
1) My takeaway from this lab was that the digestive system is a lot longer than I thought it would be. Not just the whole digestive system, but each individual organ surprised me with its length. I had no idea my mouth was 10 centimeters, or that my stomach was 19 centimeters. But what surprised me the most was that the small intestine was 6.807 meters and was able to fit inside my body.
2) My digestive track is 9.169 meters where my height is 1.702 meters. My digestive system is about 5 and a half times longer than my height. I think that the digestive system is able to fit inside my body because it is bent and curved multiple times so reduce the amount of space it takes up.
3) I think it takes about 6 hours for food to go through the entire digestive system. The time food stays in the mouth and esophagus is pretty brief, but I believe the food stays in the stomach for about 2 hours to get thoroughly digested. I think it takes about 2 hours or so to pass through the small intestine due to its extreme length and about an hour through the large intestine and then out the rectum.
4) Digestion is the process of breaking down of food mechanically and with enzymes into simple molecules that can be used by the body. Organs part of the digestion process is the mouth and stomach. Absorption is the process where the digested material is absorbed into the bloodstream and lymphatic system where the nutrients can be transported to other cells, tissues, and organs. Organs responsible for absorption are the small and large intestine.
5) A question I have is how the mucus surrounding the stomach walls are able to keep the stomach acid from burning through the stomach.
